Since I googled this following my situation I wanted to report that the above apple.com link solved my problem which had different criteria.

I did an erase of 10.4 and the entire hard drive, and a fresh install of 10.5.

I restored my data from a Time Machine backup. Then I discovered my password was no longer recognized and I couldn't login, despite the "hint" confirming I knew the password.

I followed the steps outlined at the apple.com link above and they solved my problem.
